Lightbox Paintings (cityscapes and nature)

I’ve always been intrigued with translucent colors you see in the canopy of a forest, stained glass, or even commercial signage. As an artist, I’ve been experimenting for years with methods to incorporate translucency into my art. My recent work is finally getting close. I developed a mixed media ‘lightbox’ technique where I print a black image on a translucent acrylic panel. I use that panel as a canvas to paint with tinted resins.

Sometimes, I fuse branches, pebbles or metal into the resin to enhance the 3D effect. Finally, I build custom frames with high quality LED lighting and a discreet plug in the frame.

The final effect is an interesting sculptural surface by day with the light off. When the light is on, more details emerge creating an emotional window to the place that reminds us, both literally and figuratively, to pause and ‘look closer.’

Note: All lightbox paintings come with a plug, a small DC transformer, and a remote to control brightness.

Small Translucent paintings:

All the work on my site is original (and quite time consuming). As an alternative to prints, I developed a less expensive 9”×9” format for people who would like a less expensive piece of original art. This format doesn’t have lights built in. Instead, the translucent format is intended to be backlit with ambient light like a window (ideally a north window that does not have a lot direct sunlight) or on a shelf with small led strip behind it. These smalls can stand or be hung.

Tabletop Lightbox Paintings:

This started as an experiment to take paintings off the wall as a freestanding format. They have proven to be a popular solution, especially for people who have limited wall space.

Wood forms:

Woodworking has always been an interest of mine, no doubt inspired by my childhood as a farm boy in the forests of Minnesota.

My interest in woodturning was sparked many years ago during a creative workshop with Hallmark, where I was employed as a creative for over 35 years. I immediately connected with this special medium. I find the touch and scent of wood to be peaceful and nostalgic.
